First Grade: Laying the Foundation

At Elvel School, First Grade is where the real journey begins. Students enter a new stage of structured learning, and with it, a growing sense of responsibility, independence, and wonder. We build strong academic foundations in both English and Spanish, guiding students as they take their first confident steps as readers, writers, and problem-solvers.

By the end of First Grade, our students are:

• Reading full sentences and short books in English

• Writing simple paragraphs and expressing ideas clearly

• Solving basic math problems and understanding number relationships

• Exploring science and social concepts with curiosity

• Developing friendships, teamwork, and self-control

It’s a year full of “firsts”—first journals, first group projects, first performances—and we ensure every child feels capable and excited for what’s next.
